Heroes for Hunger

See a need, meet a need. Learning to be a leader involves learning to serve others. Two years ago the Springhill Heroes for Hunger program was started to provide food for students when school is on break. The program, coordinated by parent volunteers Heather Bartholomew and Jennifer Offutt and the school counselor Tara Efird, encourages students to be responsible for collecting the food items. Thanks to their work and the generosity of Springhill families, Heroes for Hunger now provides food to school age children who would otherwise go without.

The “kid-friendly” ready-to-eat food is sent home over the holidays at no cost to the child’s family or the school. Through program coordinators, the food is distributed to students who display educational, physical, or emotional problems at school due to hunger at home. A holiday meal is provided for families in need during Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter holidays.

Students collected over 9,000 food items, surpassing this year’s goal of 6,000. Along with providing for SpES students, meals were shared with students in need at two other schools in the district.
